Education

How does your institution serve the goals of educating other museum professionals and/or the community?
The Greensboro Children's Museum staff often attends outside community meetings to speak about what the museum is doing to be a leader in informal education in the community. GCM Staff also participates in a variety of community consortiums and organizations to represent the Children's Museum.

Promotion

What methods are used to 'get the word out' about your institution's offerings?
The museum markets itself and its programs through a variety of different media outlets using free and paid promotion. We advertise in the local paper, in magazines, the web and try to get as much free TV coverage as possible. In addition, the museum promotes upcoming events and programs through a weekly e-newsletter, Twitter messages and the museum's website and Facebook page.

Challenges

What are the main challenges facing the museum today?
The main challenge for the museum is funding. We are the only museum in the city of Greensboro that does not receive city or county funding.

Successes

Are there any recent successes you would like to highlight?
The Greensboro Children's Museum has been selected to be the first children's museum in the country to have an Edible Schoolyard backed by Alice Waters and the Chez Panisse Foundation. The Edible Schoolyard at GCM is expected to serve as a national model for other museums and children's institutions nationwide promoting health and wellness in young children and families.

Future Projects/Renovations

What do you see in the future for your institution?
The vision of the Greensboro Children's Museum is to become a leader in the national movement to promote health and wellness through programs inspired by edible landscapes. A truly healthy child is active, understands balanced nutrition and has a relationship with nature. The Edible Schoolyard (ESY) will become the guiding framework for the entire museum towards a newly invigorated focus on enriching lives through reconnecting with the natural world, while concurrently promoting health and wellness.
